Last Look Proofreading

Reader-Proof Your Work

What will annoy a reader faster than you can say, “Holy One Star Review, Batman!”? Simple writing mistakes that are easily fixed. Misplaced punctuation, forgotten words, skipped letters, incorrect homophones (they’re/their/there), and other language issues can get in the way of even the best writing, causing unhappy readers, poor reviews, and fewer sales than you deserve. As a reader, I know that nothing pulls me out of a book like noticing typos and errors. After enough of these, I start to focus on how many mistakes I’ve seen rather than the story itself, and after reaching my saturation point, I simply stop reading.

I believe most of these mistakes happen not because authors truly don’t know the difference between, for example, “it’s” (a contraction of “it is” or “it has”), “its” (a possessive pronoun), and “its’ ” (not a word), but because authors are so familiar with their own story that they see what they meant to write, not what they’ve actually written. Even professional editors can sometimes be more focused on the bigger-picture and not notice the little errors, especially if they go through the work several times.

The more eyes you have reviewing your work before making it available to readers, the better it is going to be. My service provides one last look before publishing, after you’ve run your work through writing groups, editors, and beta readers – a fresh set of eyes to help catch the little errors that can have a big effect on your bottom line.

This is a proofreading service, not substantive or copy editing. I’m looking for things that readers are most likely to notice, including incorrect or unclear punctuation, missing letters/words, incorrect use of homophones, and verb/tense disagreement. Turnaround time is generally 1-2 weeks. Please no erotica or graphic violence. I use Microsoft Word’s Track Changes feature – you have full control to accept or reject my changes.
